Prescriptive Advice for Post-Piercing Pain

Prescriptive Advice for Post-Piercing Pain

Post-piercing pain is normal, but that doesn’t mean it’s not uncomfortable. To help you manage post-piercing pain, we consulted with Rowan Medical Advisory Board Member Dr. Nancy Fazzinga who shared the following tips:

- Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers: Acetaminophen can help reduce discomfort following a piercing

- Cold Compress: Applying a cold pack to the area can soothe the “hot” sensation and help minimize swelling

- Regular Aftercare Spritzes: Using Advanced Aftercare Solution 2–3 times per day helps keep the area clean, reducing the risk of infection-related pain

- Avoid touching the piercing: Touching the piercing can introduce bacteria and increase irritation, so it's best to leave it alone while you’re healing*

* If you must touch the piercing, make sure you wash your hands beforehand to ensure bacteria is not introduced to the site

How do I know if my post-piercing pain is normal?

Look out for signs of infection including redness and swelling that spreads beyond the piercing site, increased pain or tenderness, a feeling of warmth to the touch, yellow or green pus oozing from the piercing, or the earring becoming embedded into the ear. If you suspect your piercing may be infected, consult your doctor immediately to determine the best treatment plan and continue to clean the piercing site with Advanced Aftercare Solution.
