Can I Use Makeup, Skin, and Hair Products Around My New Piercing?
The Dos and Don’ts of Post-Piercing Primping
You just got another piercing? Congrats! Now let’s talk about aftercare to make sure your piercing heals as quickly and as well as possible.
General Rules of Thumb
Aftercare isn’t an afterthought.
1. Wash your hands before touching your piercing (if you must touch it at all.
2. Continue to use your Advanced Aftercare Spray 2-3 times daily for at least 30 days.
3. Disinfect anything that goes in, on, or around your ears at least once daily (yes, that means your cell phone, your headphones, and your sunnies)
The “Absolutely Not” Products
Soaps, and ointments, and creams, oh my! None of these should be used on your healing piercing. This includes rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, neosporin, or lotions. These products can clog the piercing and disrupt adequate air flow which promotes proper healing.
The “Yes, But There’s a Catch” Products
Shampoo & Conditioner
We know that everyone is on a strict hair-washing schedule, and we don’t want your new piercing to mess with that! Just rinse your new piercing with warm water for at least 30 seconds following shampooing & conditioning, and make sure no hair is caught in your piercing.
Hairspray
Generally, hairspray is safe to use around a new piercing. After using hairspray, rinse your piercing with your aftercare solution to avoid irritation.
Sunscreen
When you need to protect your ears with sunscreen, try to avoid the piercing site as much as possible. Following sunscreen application, rinse your piercing thoroughly with your aftercare solution by spraying the front and back of the piercing area.
Perfume
Fragrance can be irritating to a new piercing. Avoid the ear when spritzing, and you’ll be good to go.
The “Totally Fine” Products
As long as it’s not going on your ear, you’re in the clear. Continue to use skin care, makeup, self-tanner, and body lotion as usual.
