Your Guide To Our Earring Backs
Baby Got (Earring) Back

Looking for earrings but not sure what back is best for you? Here are descriptions of each earring back type.
Flat Backs
Our Flat Back earrings are designed for all-day, everyday wear -- truly 24/7. True to their name, they feature a sleek, disc-shaped back that sits flush against the ear for a comfortable, low-profile fit.
These earrings are available for purchase as single earrings, exclusively in-studio.
When opting for our needle piercing method, the piercing is performed with a sterile needle, and the Flat Back earring is then seamlessly inserted using a taper for a precise, secure placement.
Bell Backs
If you choose our device piercing method, which utilizes a hand-pressurized tool fully controlled by our experienced nurses' hands, we use either Butterfly Back or Bell Back earrings for the procedure.
Some of our device piercing earrings feature a "Bell Back" design—a closed back that ensures the earring post won’t poke or irritate the piercing. The Bell Back also provides an added layer of comfort by preventing the earring from being worn too tightly, promoting proper healing of the fresh piercing.
Butterfly Backs
Our non-piercing studs and select device piercing styles feature a "Butterfly Back"—likely what you think of when you think of a traditional earring back. It stays firmly in place to ensure the earring remains secure in your fresh piercing.
For Butterfly Back earrings, it's crucial not to push the back up too close to the ear, especially immediately after the piercing. Instead, allow the back to naturally click into place at the notch at the end of the earring post. This ensures proper airflow around the piercing, supporting optimal healing and comfort.
Why can’t I get pierced with an endless hoop?
At Rowan, safety is our number one priority. We’ll be the first to tell you that when you get a needle piercing, you shouldn’t touch, twist, or rotate your earring - but, due to their seamless design, that’s exactly what endless hoops do!
Let the tissue heal without added irritation to the site and your ear (and your piercer!) will thank you.
