What is a Flat Piercing?

With so many names for different ear piercing placements floating around, it’s hard to keep them straight! Here’s everything you need to know about the Flat piercing before you get one.

What is a Flat Piercing?

A flat piercing is a piercing performed on the upper, more flat part of the ear, below the helix. This is considered a cartilage piercing and is performed with a needle rather than a hand-pressurized device.

How Do I Style a Flat Piercing?

The flat is a common place for a larger, statement piece that may not necessarily fit elsewhere or for a few smaller pieces making a constellation. Hoops are not typically placed in the flat.

If you do decide to place a hoop in your flat, make sure that you wait at least 6 months to do so, and check in with your nurse to make sure the hoop is large enough to accommodate the piercing.

How Do I Take Care of My Flat Piercing?

The standard healing time for a Flat piercing is 9-12 months. To ensure a speedy healing process, it’s important to follow our nurses’ aftercare instructions. Always wash your hands before touching your earrings, and try to limit touching your ears to only when you are cleaning. Clean the front and back of your piercing with our aftercare solution 2 to 3 times per day for at least 8 weeks. Give your earrings a 30-second rinse with warm water in the shower.

It’s best not to sleep on a Flat Piercing for the first several months. Sleeping on a Flat piercing, especially before your post has been changed, can change the angle or direction of your piercing. We recommend using a piercing pillow to make sure you keep the piercing safe.

Also - be mindful of eye- and sunglasses, as they may rest in the vicinity of your Flat piercing. It’s important to disinfect these items daily to avoid infection and irritation.
